How to check the Towing Capacity of your Vehicle
It is important to know that not all vehicles are suitable for towing. To find out if your vehicle has towing capabilities you will need to check the towing capacity; this is the maximum weight the vehicle can legally and safely tow.
To work out vehicles towing capacity you will need two key figures. The Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and the Gross Train Weight (GTW) these can be found on the VIN plate and vehicle manual.
To calculate towing capacity, subtract GVW from GTW. This will give you a figure in kilograms and will determine your safe and legal towing weight.
If the vehicle is not suitable for towing, line 2 of the VIN Plate will either be left blank or display ‘XXXX’ or '----'.
Towing capacities do vary on every vehicle so it is always important to check before hooking up a caravan or trailer.
